Bedlam (1946)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Loony Inn

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Boris Karloff is excellent as the sinister Master George Sims, head of St. Mary's of Bethlehem Asylum, a.k.a. "Bedlam." When a pretty activist (Anna Lee) finds out about the horrific conditions therein, she tries to do something about it and winds up an inmate. Producer Val Lewton and director Mark Robson avoid the supernatural on this one, concentrating instead on more "realistic," psychological horrors. It was Lewton's final horror film, and it lost money for RKO.
