Friday the 13th Part 3 - 3D (1982)
Sticking Out
By Jeffrey M. Anderson By the time this third film came around, the infamous series was already starting to morph into something basic and primal. No more plot or character motivation was necessary, just a healthy dose of sex and gore. Unfortunately, this entry is very light on the sex part. Joe Bob Briggs officially counted two breasts, but that's negligible, since the actress in question is seen showering from her shoulders up. The one interesting element is the addition of a comic relief character that practices gore makeup as a hobby. His "tricks" make silly little red herrings from time to time. Otherwise, the gore is surprisingly suggestive, rather than blatant, and therefore the audience doesn't quite get what it pays for. This one features the 3D gimmick that was briefly popular in 1983, and it mostly consists of things sticking out into the audience. DVD Details: Paramount's 2009 DVD release finally gives viewers the option of choosing between the 2D and 3D versions. The 3D mostly works when there's not much going on, but when machetes and axe handles stick out of the screen, the image tends to split apart. Likewise the colors seem to disappear into a kind of mushy purple-brown. (Of course, this effect could have been either because of my TV or my position in the room, or both.) The new DVD also comes with a trailer.
