Husbands and Wives (1992)
Mate or Break
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Judy Davis was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her great performance in this 1992 Woody Allen masterpiece, but let's not forget that Woody himself is a pretty great comic actor, playing nervousness and neuroses like he plays his clarinet. In the film, he's a professor who develops a crush on an attractive writing student (Juliette Lewis), endangering his relationship with his wife (Mia Farrow). Davis plays a distraught wife just beginning a divorce from her husband (Sydney Pollack) and dating a romantic Irishman (Liam Neeson).
Husbands and Wives was unfairly judged at the time because it paralleled Allen and Farrow's real-life romantic struggles, but this new DVD proves that it's one of the director's greatest films. It also received a Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay. Carlo Di Palma provided the mostly hand-held cinematography.
