Frogs (1972)

2 Stars (out of 4)

Not So Ribbiting

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Sam Elliott, pre-mustache, plays a photographer who has a run-in with a wealthy family — the hotshot son causes Sam to drop his camera in the swamp — and is asked to stay as their guest. Ray Milland, an Oscar-winner for The Lost Weekend (1945), stars as the grumpy family patriarch, in a wheelchair. He intends on having a Fourth of July party, come hell or high water. Frogs and lots of other creatures start attacking. Basically after every scene, there's a cutaway to frog close-ups, or lizards, or snakes, or gators. It's pretty dumb and not very scary. I had seen it before on VHS and had fun memories of it, and supposedly Quentin Tarantino is a fan, but it did not hold up. Kino Lorber's 2024 Blu-ray release comes with a commentary track by film historian David Del Valle and film historian and producer Dan Marino (son of the Miami Dolphins quarterback), an interview with actress Joan Van Ark, radio and TV spots, and theatrical trailers.
