Rhyming Hood
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Cinematographer Ernest R. Dickerson, who photographed Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989) and Malcolm X (1992), among other films, makes his directorial debut with Juice (1992), an above-average story of four "boys in the hood." Omar Epps plays the stable one with a dream of becoming a deejay. Tupac Shakur plays the out-of-control one, who gets ahold of a gun and changes their lives forever. The film doesn't go for cheap exploitation, but instead explores the real struggles and consequences of being young and black, at the same time generating real suspense. The excellent cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson and Queen Latifah.
