Rumble in the Bronx (1996)
'Bronx' Cheer
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Rumble in the Bronx has been re-edited from its original Hong Kong cut and dubbed into English. The simple plot is often ridiculous and the dialogue is often laughable. The movie is filmed in Canada, which looks absolutely nothing like the Bronx. Frankly, it's not nearly as good as Chan's Hong Kong imports from the last ten years. That's the bad news. The good news is that the movie rocks as hard as some of Chan's best work. I've seen Jackie Chan movies in Cantonese with no subtitles, and it's easy to shake off the plot that you don't understand and just root for the good guys. The same goes here. Just forget the movie's shortcomings and experience Jackie Chan, one of the world's greatest living film artists. If you want to laugh at the bad dubbing, go ahead. I'm sure Jackie wouldn't mind if he got you to laugh. This is a wonderful movie. I hope it's a big hit so that America gets to see more of Jackie. I can't wait to see it again.
