Dino Fun
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Steven Spielberg's summer adventure is still one of the ultimate movie roller coaster rides. Sam Neill and Laura Dern are scientists and Jeff Goldblum is a mathematician who are invited to "Jurassic Park," an island theme park with real-live dinosaurs, cloned and resurrected by John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). Hammond's grandchildren are also along for the ride.
As in Frankenstein and many other films, every time man meddles with nature, man's own nature enters the mix, and the dinosaurs are soon free and rampaging. Goldblum is the only character that really comes to life, and the movie's energy comes primarily from the visual effects and the raw suspense. Outside of the impressive dinosaurs, Spielberg cooks up many memorable moments, such as the rear view mirror, and the vibrating cups of water. If it had more human energy, though, it could have been a classic.
Nevertheless, it was a monster hit. Two sequels followed, which was to be expected, but what was unexpected is that, by Christmastime, Spielberg had released Schindler's List, making 1993 one of the greatest director twofers in history. For its 20th anniversary, Jurassic Park was re-released in theaters in a 3D print.
