Light and Flowers

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Maria Candelaria was shot in Mexico by the great cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa, and his most frequent collaborator: writer, director, and actor Emilio Fernandez (best known as "Mapache" in The Wild Bunch). Dolores Del Rio plays Maria Candelaria, a young woman born into scandal from a mother who was a known "woman of the street." It's a classic tragedy told well. Still, there are joyful moments, as when Maria goes off to market in a canoe full of flowers, gliding along, reflected in the crystal water. Del Rio is radiant shot with light gleaming from her face.
