Face the Truth
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
John Frankenheimer's Seconds is one of the rare sci-fi films that skimped on special effects and concentrated on ideas. A middle-aged man decides to invest in a company that provides you with a younger face, body and identity. In this case he wakes up as Rock Hudson! He moves to California and becomes a successful artist, but realizes that he has no more answers in this life than he did in his old one. It's a dark vision of humanity and technology but fascinating nonetheless. James Wong Howe's black-and-white cinematography received an Oscar nomination. Paramount released a DVD in 2002 with a great commentary track by director Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate). The Criterion Collection released an updated version in 2013 (both DVD and Blu-ray) with new extras.
