Angel Hearts

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Wim Wenders created one of the German New Wave's most popular and beloved films with Wings of Desire, a gorgeous and heartbreaking look at angels in Berlin. One such angel (Bruno Ganz) falls in love with a trapeze artist (Solveig Dommartin) and longs to become human so that he can be with her. Peter Falk gives a terrific performance as an American actor who gives the angel some advice. The 2009 Criterion Collection disc lovingly highlights the film's stunning mixed black-and-white and color photography and comes with a Wenders/Falk commentary track, deleted scenes, and more. Avoid the stupid American remake, City of Angels.
