Break On Through
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Val Kilmer gives an amazing, almost pathologically correct performance in Oliver Stone's excessive but highly enjoyable biopic about Jim Morrison. Unlike other biopics, he even sings! Some of the biopic formula has been overused in the years since, and some of the cast (Kyle MacLachlan, Meg Ryan) doesn't seem quite right, but for once Stone's overblown, borderline lunatic direction perfectly fits his subject. The Doors was overshadowed later that year by Stone's JFK, but I like this one much better. Look for Christina Fulton as Nico and Crispin Glover as Andy Warhol. Artisan released an amazing two-DVD set in 2000, complete with 43 more minutes of footage(!), a Stone commentary track and lots of other featurettes. A friend of mine was an extra in the audience at the Warfield Theater.
