Gypsy King
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Sally Potter (Orlando and The Tango Lesson) directs this wonderfullyrestrained look at a Jewish immigrant singer (Christina Ricci) raised in Englandand working in a Paris opera. The film brings grace and balance to the traditionalHolocaust story, forgoing any of the usual horror show. Ricci brings adelightful gravity to her character, who falls for a Gypsy horseman (JohnnyDepp), another outcast. Potter makes beautiful use of music, including a knowledgeof when not to use it, a skill most filmmakers do no possess. John Turturro, CateBlanchett, and Harry Dean Stanton also star. DVD Details: That's my quote on the back of the box, lifted from my 2001 interview with Sally Potter.
