Hope and Stories
By Jeffrey M. Anderson A boy and girl dress up and put on plays with the help of a storytelling machine. This is an absolutely delicious feature from animator Michel Ocelot, whose last feature, Kirikou and the Sorceress (1998), turned heads in France two years ago. It's like the best of Chuck Jones and Hayao Miyazaki, but it's all done in silhouette, reminiscent of Lotte Reiniger's work in the 1920s (The Adventures of Prince Achmed). These six stories have the feel of gentle classics, but also an inviting freshness. Princes and Princesses is a must for kids who can read subtitles, and anyone else who was once a kid. Kino released the movie on DVD in 2008, but with one major drawback: no dubbed English track for very young viewers. (The film is very wordy for those unable to read yet.) I wanted to show it to my two year-old but opted to wait awhile. There are no other extras. Subsequently, Kino released another Ocelot film, Kirikou and the Wild Beast, also in French with no optional English track.
