Seed of Chucky (2004)

Gag Dolls

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

This fifth movie in the Child's Play series is considered one of the worst, but I like it for its full meta-absurdity. It introduces a new character, an androgynous (and non-binary) doll (voiced by Billy Boyd) who realizes that he is the offspring of Chucky and Tiffany. He goes to Hollywood, where a new Chucky movie is shooting, to find them. He resurrects them, and Chucky begins calling him "Glen," while Tiffany calls him "Glenda." (This is a reference to the Ed Wood movie.) Meanwhile, Jennifer Tilly wants the role of the Virgin Mary in a new movie to be directed by rapper Redman, and plans to seduce him to win it. (Layers of irony.) Tiffany has a plan to impregnate Jennifer and put Glen/Glenda inside her child, while Tiffany takes over Jennifer. There's a Christmas sequence, references to Tilly's movie Bound, a Britney Spears lookalike, and, deliciously, John Waters as a paparazzi!
