'Aeon' Sux
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Paramount did not screen this film, based on the MTV aniamted series, for the press, which is always a bad sign. Set in the year 2415 in an insulated, conservative society, a band of rebels, including our title heroine (Charlize Theron), attempts to bring down the all-powerful leaders and uncover their dark secret. Director Karyn Kusama (Girlfight) and screenwriters Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi (Crazy/Beautiful) portray the future in a monotone drone, forcing the poor actors (Frances McDormand, Marton Csokas, Sophie Okonedo, etc.) to murmur their flat, lifeless dialogue. The jumpy, disorienting action sequences, however, are strictly present day. On the plus side, the movie impresses with its dazzling costume design, and Theron looks great and moves beautifully in her slinky black attire.
