If the Shoe Fits
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Graphic designer and perpetual bachelor Tony Takitani (Issei Ogata) marries a beautiful girl (Rie Miyazawa) with an obsession for buying new clothes and shoes. When he tries to get her to stop, it literally leads to her death. So Tony comes up with an inventive, heartbreaking way to pay homage to her spirit. Jun Ichikawa's slight, lovely little drama understands the pleasure of seeing, using many quiet, patient takes to absorb its delicate visuals. But while Ozu's films have a relaxing sense of life-flow, Tony Takitani veers somewhere else, into a life very nearly untouched and untouchable. It's both mesmerizing and suffocating. The short story, by Haruki Murakami originally appeared in the New Yorker. DVD Details:Strand's American DVD release comes with only trailers.
