Racing in the Heart
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
It seems like more of a movie pitch (D.O.A. meets Speed) than a movie, but Crank gets by on a unique kind of absurd, deadpan humor in which the most implausible stuff cheerfully happens anyway. A professional killer with a great name, Chev Chelios (Jason Statham), wakes up with his body full of a weird Chinese drug; he must keep his adrenaline pumping to survive. To accomplish this, he steals drugs from a hospital, rides a motorcycle at top speeds, has sex with his girlfriend (Amy Smart) in public, and sticks his hand in a waffle iron. Writers and directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor keep everything moving at top speed, with playful little visual tricks and all kinds of colorful characters, but the twitchy camerawork and very fast editing can wear down casual viewers.
