Bland 'Motel'
By Jeffrey M. Anderson One of the greatest tragedies in movies involves coming-of-age stories that look and feel exactly the same, as if everyone had lived the same childhood. Written in English and directed by Michael Kang, The Motel at least has a different setting: a sleazy pay-by-the-hour joint where drunken patrons bring cheap girls (even if the movie itself stays on the safe side). And our hero, Ernest (Jeffrey Chyau) is a chunky, bespectacled Chinese-American kid who helps his tyrannical mother clean the rooms. He is secretly in love with a slightly older girl, a waitress at a Chinese restaurant, and befriends a slick businessman, who teaches a few life lessons, but each of Ernest's interactions and epiphanies is pure, calculated movieland. DVD Details: Palm Pictures' DVD comes with a commentary track by director Kang and actors Jeffrey Chyau and Sung Kang, as well as a featurette, deleted scenes, audition tapes and trailers.
