I Want a New Slug
By Jeffrey M. Anderson James Gunn, a former Troma disciple (Tromeo & Juliet) and screenwriter on the Scooby-Doo movies and the Dawn of the Dead remake, directs this funny, disgusting, derivative splatter flick. Just like in The Blob (1958), a meteor crashes down to earth containing an icky slug, and it inhabits the body of local redneck Grant Grant (Michael Rooker). He proceeds to snatch more bodies, using an army of speedy, red, oversized worms. His unhappy but devoted trophy wife (Elizabeth Banks) tries to help, and the local yokel sheriff (Nathan Fillion) snaps into action. Gunn's dialogue is casually, ironically smart and his characters show comic promise, but the sci-fi situation blandly borrows from The Fly, Alien and a dozen others without the thrill of reinvention.
