Death at a Funeral (2007)
Casket Case
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Everything goes wrong at a quiet English countryside funeral, but rather than dry, smart humor, the broad jokes include: a foul-mouthed old man having a bowel movement, a character who unexpectedly turns out to be gay and another who mistakenly takes hallucinogenic drugs. Frank Oz directed, and though he has previously specialized in black comedies (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, etc.), he brings perhaps too much American sensibility to this film. Set among the perpetually polite and embarrassed British, the film is at least tolerable, but had it been set in America, the same material would have been unbearable. The talented cast (Matthew Macfadyen, Keeley Hawes, Alan Tudyk and many others) helps stabilize the affair, and Peter Dinklage (Find Me Guilty) is the token Yankee. In 2011, Fox released a handful of MGM titles on Blu-Ray, including this one. It comes with commentary track by director Frank Oz, and another one by actors Alan Tudyk and Andy Nyman and writer Dean Craig, plus a gag reel and trailers.
