I Want Someone to Eat Cheese With (2007)

2 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Hammy & 'Cheese'

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Actor Jeff Garlin, perhaps best known for his work on TV's "Arrested Development" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm," writes, directs and stars in this cynical romantic comedy. Garlin plays James, an overweight comedian working with Chicago's Second City and still living with his mom. He meets the zany Beth (Sarah Silverman), but can't seem to break out of his downward spiral. When not attempting to speak to girls, he pals around with Luca (David Pasquesi) making wry comments on anything and everything ("there's nothing hotter than an angry French woman," and "what do pirates have to do with hot dogs?"). He also dreams of one day playing Paddy Chayefsky's "Marty." The movie has a strange tone: while everything goes wrong for James, Garlin happily avoids slapstick and goes with a deadpan presentation. But at the same time, he wants James to appear sweet and so often rubs the material the wrong way, crossing the cynical and the likeable in an awkward manner. Still, there's a lot to admire here, not least of all the impressive cast of funny people: Silverman, Amy Sedaris, Bonnie Hunt, Tim Kazurinsky, Dan Castellaneta, Richard Kind and even Paul Mazursky. Elle Fanning plays James' niece, and Gina Gershon and Aaron Carter share a very funny cameo. (I suppose the grammatically correct title should be I Want Someone With Whom I Can Eat Cheese.)
