Jimmy Carter: Man from Plains (2007)
Working for Peanuts
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Jonathan Demme's camera quietly follows the 39th President of the United States on his latest book tour, promoting the controversial Palestine:Peace Not Apartheid in late 2006 and early 2007. Some have joked thatCarter has made a career out of being ex-president; he comes across asan awesome diplomat, knowledgeable and capable of speaking compellinglyon just about any subject. His discourse on religion and not letting itcross with science is especially enlightening. When journalists andinterviewers challenge him on his book, he holds his ground, but as thecontroversy grows, he shows tiny signs of becoming flustered. Themovie's major flaw is that, though Carter is on camera all the time, heis accompanied by his publicist, and remains in "performance mode"throughout. Even so, Demme's scrutiny leaves us with the picture of avery respectable and admirable man. DVD Details: Sony's 2008 DVD comes in a recycled cardboard box. Bonuses include a commentary track by Demme, outtakes, a featurette on the film's music and trailers.
