Goop Dreams
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Anthony Hopkins made his writing/directing debut at age 69 with this bizarre, alternately interesting and unwatchable, post-modern sci-fi film. He plays Felix Bonhoeffer, a screenwriter called in to fix a troubled production shooting in the desert. He hallucinates, seeing scenes from films intermingled with real life, but these appear as digital blips and flashes rather than anything organically human. Christian Slater and Jeffrey Tambor lighten things up in one sequence as a pair of strange hitmen in a coffee house. John Turturro plays a manic film producer (did Hopkins bother to direct any of these outrageous performances?) And Kevin McCarthy appears in support of a tribute to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But too much of the film is playfully self-referential to support the hallucinogenic tone; it's too aware of itself to fully abandon itself to the experiment. DVD Details: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's 2008 DVD comes with a helpful director's commentary track (he says a lot of the film came to him while undergoing a painful operation), a making-of featurette and deleted scenes.
