Pity About 'City'
By Jeffrey M. Anderson What's the difference between renting an entire season of "Sex and the City" or watching Sex and the City: The Movie? The movie is just a few minutes shorter. Seriously, the behemoth 145-minute running time for this lightweight romantic comedy is unforgivable, and that's only the first of this movie's problems. Our four friends get together once again for a series of heartbreaks, punctuated by so-called jokes. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is about to marry Big (Chris Noth), but problems arise. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) has left her husband for cheating on her. Samantha lives in Los Angeles, working for and sleeping with a much younger, hot actor. And Charlotte (Kristin Davis)... well, her drama doesn't come until late in the movie, so I won't mention it. Writer/director Michael Patrick King is mostly to blame, taking several long minutes to get across a point that, someone like Lubitsch could have done in seconds. Annoyingly, Oscar-winning "American Idol" contestant Jennifer Hudson continues her baffling career with a supporting role as Carrie's assistant (and a track on the CD soundtrack). Worst of all is that this so-called sophisticated comedy about sophisticated New York women in the 21st century resorts to jokes about humping dogs and pants-soiling.
