Djinn and Demonic
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Tobe Hooper's unjustly panned final film Djinn (2013) is set in the United Arab Emirates and deals with the evil creature of lore. In a prologue, an arrogant American goes to see a high-rise apartment building and learns (the hard way) about the creature. Then, a couple living in the United States returns home and moves into the building, which, as soon as they arrive, is surrounded by a creepy fog. The neighbors don't seem quite right, and while the husband travels back and forth to town for work, the wife is left alone to deal with the weirdness and a possible invader. Hooper is at the top of his game here with his sense of space and mood, and the movie is briskly timed and paced, though the digital FX appear a little on the cheap side. I would imagine that the "foreignness" of it likely turned off many viewers, which might explain its chilly-to-hostile reception. Never mind. Casual horror fans may not care, but for Hooper fans it's a must.
