Win One for the Slipper

Kenneth Branagh directed this update of Disney's Cinderella with plenty of colorful delight, some moments of hamminess, and plenty of computer-generated effects. Lily James plays the perfectly pretty title character, and Richard Madden is her prince, but Cate Blanchett is top-billed as the evil stepmother, given a bit of a backstory and really drizzling on the hammy, evil goodness. Ben Chaplin and Hayley Atwell play Cinderella's birth parents, and, for once, you can forgive her father for taking his miserable second wife. Cinderella received an Oscar nomination for Sandy Powell's costume design.
