Mayhem (2017)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Joe Lynch's Mayhem has one of the most appropriate titles of any movie I've ever seen. It takes place in a cutthroat law firm the day a virus is unleashed, a virus that affects inhibition and moral decisions, causing people to act out their most primitive impulses. A lawyer, Derek Cho (Steven Yeun), is framed and loses his job, and a client, Melanie Cross (Samara Weaving), is being swindled. Finding the building under quarantine, and finding themselves affected by the virus, Derek and Melanie decide to get revenge on those who wronged them. The movie is simple and straightforward and utterly bonkers, unafraid to go off the deep end, as if under the effect of the virus itself. And yet it carries a message about the evils of the corporate world, and finding time to follow one's bliss. It also contains one of the funniest line deliveries I've ever heard, involving a comparison of Derek's abilities to kick down doors with Melanie's grandmother's sex life.
