Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool (2019)
Milestone
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Directed by Stanley Nelson (The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords), Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool is long overdue, and most welcome. It's an official look at a man whom some consider to be the greatest musician of the 20th century, filled with data from the Miles Davis estate. Some may consider it to be a bit too "official" and others will consider it to be a bit too short — it has quite a bit of ground to cover, and only two hours to do it — but it nonetheless delivers a highly satisfying portrait of a complex and brilliant artist. I was already a fan and I came away tingling with new information, and a new appreciation, even if a few of my favorite records had been ignored or glossed over. Carl Lumbly narrates in Miles's "voice."
