Swell-Spoken
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
This adaptation of Edmond Rostand's play doesn't really work as a musical — even though I am a fan of the band The National, whose members created the music — and its Roxanne didn't exactly make me swoon, but it's worth seeing for Peter Dinklage's brilliant performance. Director Joe Wright's casting of Dinklage was a masterstroke, using the actor's size in the same way that previous adaptations used the character's large nose, and the actor pulls out all the stops, giving a bold, big-hearted, entirely lovable turn.
