Do Revenge (2022)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Hair on Fire

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

A vicious, razor-sharp teen comedy, Do Revenge is constructed in the vein of Heathers, Clueless, and Mean Girls, but easily able to bitchslap those movies back to where they came from. High school senior Drea (Camila Mendes) has carefully cultivated her image as the most popular girl in school. Unfortunately, she loses everything when her boyfriend, the most popular boy in school, Max (Austin Abrams), leaks a naughty video of her online. She meets new girl Eleanor (Maya Hawke), who dreams of vengeance against a girl, Carissa (Ava Capri), for spreading destructive rumors.

Inspired by Strangers on a Train, they decide to swap each other's revenges. Directed and co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (who also co-wrote Thor: Love and Thunder), the movie's pristine dialogue crackles like fake diamonds, shooting zippy zingers while remaining up-to-the-minute savvy on modern gender attitudes and social media. The visuals match, with severe, open-air compositions and a hypnotizing pastel color scheme. Its major failing is that, aiming at a teen audience, it doubles back with a most non-cynical finale; it's Promising Young Woman-lite. Sarah Michelle Gellar co-stars as the Headmaster.
