A Flip on One's Shoulder
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
This massive, wildly over-the-top Bollywood action epic with blow-out dance numbers was a rare crossover hit for the hugely successful Indian filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli. It has the kind of action sequences that John Woo was once cheered for, exciting and impossible, and performed with just the right blend of skill and wryness. The topper, as depicted by the poster, shows our two heroes Raju (Ram Charan Teja) and Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.), the former riding on the latter's shoulders after Raju's knees have been broken. They enter the fray like a giant, and dispatch enemy after enemy, even performing backflips together. As it begins, a young girl, Malli, is taken from her mother by evil English imperialists. Bheem vows to rescue her. He and Raju meet and become best friends after they rescue a young boy from a boat explosion — they tie themselves to opposite ends of a length of rope and swing back and forth under a bridge — but Bheem is betrayed when he learns that Ram is actually serving with the imperial police. There are many twists as this beast punches its way through three long hours, but it moves so beautifully and is so frequently astonishing that it's well worth a look. (The title stands for "Rise Roar Revolt.")
