Facing the Music

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

This straightforward documentary on multi-faceted musician Jon Batiste might not have been anything special, except that, on the same day Batiste was nominated for 11 Grammy awards, he learned that his longtime partner Suleika Jaouad's cancer had returned. And all this happens while he prepares for a concert at Carnegie Hall, a musical project intended to showcase modern sounds and Black artists. Filmmaker Matthew Heineman balances the two sides of the film effectively, capturing Batiste's grief and inner conflict.
