Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. (2023)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Blume County

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

This solid, snappy movie is an adaptation of a 1970 Judy Blume book I never read. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. perhaps could not have been made before now, openly discussing, as it does, young women's menstruation. Pre-teen Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is forced to move from New York to New Jersey, becomes obsessed about getting her first period (there's a "contest" with three other girls), grappling with her choice of faith, and occasionally speaking to God. Kathy Bates is a standout as Margaret's grandmother, as is Rachel McAdams as Margaret's frenzied mother. Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen) was inarguably the right choice to adapt and direct.
