Mr. Big Brother

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

George Orwell wrote Animal Farm in 1945, wrote 1984 in 1949, and died in 1950, but Raoul Peck's documentary looks at his ideas and themes and finds them frighteningly timely. Using narration and many clips from many visual adaptations of Orwell's work, the film posits theories about totalitarianism and the ways in which it can creep up on unsuspecting societies, such as the United States under the cruelty-centric rule of Donald Trump. It's a harrowing watch, but informative… and imperative.
