Sorry, Baby (2025)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Woolf in Sheep's Clothing

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Eva Victor makes their writing and directing debut, and stars in, Sorry, Baby, a smart, witty, and intuitive movie. The best thing I can say about it is that it has a Woody Allen movie vibe without seeming like a Woody Allen ripoff. Victor plays Agnes, a professor of literature, who lives a quiet life in a country house. Her friend Lydie (Naomi Ackie) comes to visit, and they spend days talking in ways that sounds like honest talk. They joke around with each other. They're not telling jokes, but their personalities are funny. Lydie tells Agnes that she's pregnant, from a sperm donor. In flashback, we see the women in college. Her advisor, Professor Decker (Louis Cancelmi) impresses her with his first novel, and he invites her to his house. In a stunning sequence, we see Agnes enter the house. The camera stays back, across the street, and cuts show that time has passed. Hours later, it's dark, and Agnes leaves the house, but clearly upset. In short, the movie is about how Agnes deals with, and has dealt with, sexual assault. There are wicked touches like Agnes getting a promotion, but also inheriting her tormentor's old office. This is a memorable, vivid debut, hopefully announcing a major talent.
