Snakes on a Boat
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Luis Llosa's Anaconda is great "B" movie trash, complete with bad special effects and cheesy monsters. The members of the mishmash cast, cobbled from the four corners of Hollywood (Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson and Danny Trejo), really look like they're having fun. Wilson gets in a couple of his trademark drawling, off-rhythm line readings, but Voight emotes like a demon from hell, all flashy eyes and spitfire. It may be the greatest scenery-chewing performance ever filmed. The plot has a bunch of filmmakers and scientists boating down the Amazon searching for a lost tribe. They run into local snake trapper Sarone (Voight) as well as the 40-foot reptile of the title. Some of them will get killed in grand style, and some will survive. Some viewers will see this as a stupid waste of time; others will have a lot of fun. DVD Details: I checked out Anaconda on one of Columbia/TriStar's excellent Superbit discs, which eliminates extras in favor of using more disc space for picture and sound quality.
