Continental Divide (1981)
Belushi Bliss
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Continental Divide stars John Belushi as a loose-cannon, Mike Royko-type Chicago columnist who, after investigating a corrupt alderman and being assaulted by crooked cops, is forced to head out to the country. Before long, he falls in love with his exact opposite: a lady bird-watcher (Blair Brown). Written by Lawrence Kasdan, the movie is very slight and grows less interesting as Belushi's character is tamed, but it's a rare, welcome look a the late, great comedian's romantic side, and it works despite everything. It was the second-to-last of his seven live-action film roles. Steven Spielberg co-produced. In 2020, Kino Lorber released a Blu-ray edition, with a commentary track by film historians Daniel Kremer and Nat Segaloff and trailers.
