The Dreamlife of Angels (1998)

'Angels' Treads

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

A very good first film by French director Erick Zonca, starring Elodie Bouchez, winner of the Best Actress Award at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. Bouchez plays a 21 year old plucky drifter who winds up in Lille with no money. She meets a woman (Natacha Regnier) working an odd job, and the two become friends. They inhabit a flat that belongs to a mother and daughter who were in an auto accident and are now in comas in the hospital. As the movie progresses, their relationship grows more and more complex and interesting. The Dreamlife of Angels doesn't offer any cinematic breakthroughs, but my interest never flagged, and it's good to see that rare commodity of interesting parts for women.
