The General's Daughter (1999)
Hot Salute
By Jeffrey M. Anderson John Travolta stars as a rumpled army investigator in this political thriller. The sexy daughter (Leslie Stefanson) of 3-star General (James Cromwell) has been raped and murdered. Rape expert Madeleine Stowe is called in to assist Travolta and the two banter playfully. Director Simon West (Con Air) has no subtlety or technique, but the screenplay, co-written by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), provides enough lucid moments to make the movie work for a while, particularly the tet-a-tet between Travolta and James Woods. The ending goes completely to ruin, however, as West throws in his usual explosions and stupid plot turns.
