Proud Marry
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Peter Weir's Green Card introduced the charming bear Gérard Depardieu to a wider American audience in this slight, but endearing romantic comedy. Brontë (luminous Andie MacDowell) agrees to marry Georges (Depardieu) so he can stay in the United States, but then comes all the preparations and investigations, during which time the couple becomes genuinely drawn to each other. Weir makes fine, lovely use of New York locations, keeping the story rooted. He received an Oscar nomination for his original screenplay. Kino Lorber released it on Blu-ray in 2019. It includes a new 10-minute interview with MacDowell and a theatrical trailer.
