Malfunctioning 'Gadget'
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Disney's live-action version of the animated cartoon series is only occasionally entertaining but should be enjoyable for kids. It stars Matthew Broderick as Inspector Gadget, Rupert Everett as bad guy Sanford Scolex, and Joely Fisher as Dr. Brenda, the Gadget's creator. The movie comes across as frenzied as a Saturday morning cartoon, with all kinds of stuff being hurled at us at top speeds for 90 minutes and barely affords time to get to know the characters. First time director David Kellogg comes from television commercials, which is apparent from the shameless product placements throughout. The smart young actress Michelle Trachtenberg (Harriet the Spy) also stars.
