Filler 'Instinct'
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Anthony Hopkins plays a reclusive primatologist who lived with gorillas and killed a man. Cuba Gooding Jr. plays a hotshot psychiatrist who tries to get through to him. These two actors give rich, nuanced performances and it's a joy to see them play off each other. (Hopkins occasionally throws in a taste of Hannibal Lecter.) But after 90 minutes director Jon Turtletaub (Phenomenon) allows all kinds of schlock in: the music swells as the other mental patients begin to assert themselves, and everybody cries as the music continues to swell. The movie never recovers. Donald Sutherland and the wonderful Maura Tierney (Forces of Nature) also star.
