My Son the Fanatic (1999)
Culture Sock
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Om Puri stars as an Indian cab driver living in England. His son (Gopi Desai) begins zealously pursuing his Indian culture and alienates his family in the process. Meanwhile his father falls in love with a prostitute (Rachel Griffiths) that he drives around as part of his job. Writer Hanif Kureishi's movies all have a tragicomic feel to them; he tries to look at absurd situations seriously. Some scenes involving the mysterious Mr. Schitz (Stellan Skarsgard) feel gimmicky and don't quite jell. But Om Puri gives an extraordinary performance, and breathes real exhaustion, anger, and excitement into his role.
