New Waterford Girl (1999)
Baby Place
By Jeffrey M. Anderson This winning little comedy from Pump Up the Volume director Allan Moyle never received a theatrical release here in San Francisco, but it's worth seeking on DVD. Newcomer Liane Balaban turns in a sparkling performance as 15 year-old "Moonie" Pottie, a smart and off beat girl who longs to get out of her tiny Nova Scotia town, and decides that the only way to swing it is to fake a pregnancy. Things change, however, when a new girl named Lou Benzoa (Tara Spencer-Nairn) shows up, having moved from the Bronx and bringing some of her New York attitude with her. Cathy Moriarty and Andrew McCarthy co-star. Wellspring's 2002 DVD comes with a trailer and a short featurette.
