The Green Pile
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Clint Eastwood apparently pumped this out quickly, worried that his great White Hunter, Black Heart from earlier that year was going to be a big money-loser. (He was right: The Rookie made more than $20 million as compared to White Hunter's $2 million.) Unfortunately it's Eastwood's lowest point as a director. It's not necessarily bad, but it's crushingly routine, delivered without care, and with emphasis only on some expensive-looking chase scenes and stunts. Eastwood plays the cigar-chomping, grizzled veteran cop whose old partner gets killed while investigating a chop shop ring. Charlie Sheen is the new, young partner. The two stars have no chemistry and their "old coot vs. young punk" banter is pretty tired. The accented villains, played by Raul Julia and Sonia Braga, are even worse (it was their third of four films together). Lara Flynn Boyle, who was on TV's "Twin Peaks" that year, appears as Sheen's girlfriend, but has nothing to do.
