And Then There Were None (1945)
Ten Little Indians
By Jeffrey M. Anderson French director Rene Clair (who falls just shy of "master" status) made the outstanding And Then There Were None (1945) during his Hollywood years. Ten guests in an island house getknocked off one by one, each suspecting the other of being the murderer. Clair mostly uses character actors (Walter Huston, Mischa Auer, C. Aubrey Smith, Judith Anderson, etc.) to flesh out the roles, making them all the more potent. The director then perfectly disguises the murderer for those who aren't familiar with the story, and I was guessing all the way up until the end. VCI Entertainment's DVD release is bargain basement stuff, but well worth the tiny price tag. Dudley Nichols wrote the screenplay, based, of course, on the novel by Agatha Christie.
