Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Camp-Down

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

This is perhaps the least interesting of all the Friday the 13th films, since it tries to be a "sequel" to the first film, referencing themes and storylines; things would get more interesting as the films became more stripped-down, more self-contained and more primal, essentially hideous clones of one another. Fans know that this is Jason's first outing as the killer, though the film once again plays it as a murder mystery, with his identity a secret until the climax. Still, it does deliver the gore and nudity. Director Steve Miner was a producer and unit production manager on the original film.

In 2025, Paramount released a 4K & Blu-ray edition, with a superb transfer. Audio is available in a 5.1 DTS version, as well as a Mono version, audio description, German, Spanish, and French language tracks. Subtitles are available in English, English for the Hearing Impaired, German, Spanish, and French. Bonuses include "Inside 'Crystal Lake Memories'" (11:15), in which Del Howison interviews author Peter Bracke; "Friday's Legacy: Horror Conventions" (6:50), about fans at horror conventions, "Lost Tales from Camp Blood Part II" (8:54), part of a series of short films, and "Jason Forever" (29:27), a panel discussion with all the actors who played Jason, plus the original theatrical trailer. Recommended.
