Fright Night (1985)

Vamp Classic

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Tom Holland's Fright Night, a horror movie with comic elements, was well-received during its day and it still holds up. Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) is a normal, all-American teen with a normal, all-American girlfriend, Amy (Amanda Bearse), and a not-so-normal best pal called "Evil Ed" (Stephen Geoffreys). Charley loves late-night horror movies and is a fan of host Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), known for playing a vampire hunter. When Charley discovers a real vampire (Chris Sarandon) living next door, and no one will believe him, he tries to recruit Peter to stop him. (They're like the vampire version of Marty McFly and Doc Brown.) The movie does well in its mix of near-humor ("you're so cool, Brewster!") and genuine threat (as when Charley's mother cluelessly invites the vampire into their home). A sequel followed in 1988, and a surprisingly good remake was released in 2011.
