Money People
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Based on the unfinished novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, this all-star film adapted by Harold Pinter and directed by Elia Kazan stiffens the material and attempts to make something more out of it. Kazan's rigid directing kills the spontaneity of nearly every cast member, including a miscast Robert De Niro as hotshot Hollywood producer Monroe Stahr. Stahr falls in love with a young woman (Ingrid Boulting) who reminds him of his late movie star wife. Only Robert Mitchum and Jack Nicholson in their supporting roles show enough charisma to beat Kazan at his game and inject the film with some personality. Otherwise, Fitzgerald's jazziness and life are all but gone. Paramount's transfer looks great but the disc contains no extras.
