The Long Voyage Home (1940)
Ship to Sure
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
The Long Voyage Home is an eerily beautiful wartime film photographed by Gregg Toland (just before Citizen Kane), based on a series of one-act plays by Eugene O'Neill. It depicts a hazardous shipboard journey from the West Indies back to the U.S. during WWII. Director John Ford's usual crew turns up, including Thomas Mitchell, Barry Fitzgerald, and Ward Bond. John Wayne actually performs the entire film in a Swedish accent!
